Yeah, put me down in the "pro-third hour" column. I felt like it was dragging for a while, but by the time we land at the payoff of the final scenes (particularly THAT last shot and THAT last line), I felt the movie had resolved itself into a much more interesting shape than it would have had if it had ended after hour two.

"Poor Babylon." Concur. I like this movie a lot, but that movie's a much wilder swing, significantly more for grown-ups (with obvious minor exceptions you could practically show Oppenheimer to middle schoolers), and if I had to choose one I'd have rather Babylon made the half billion plus.

As for hour three, it does go on, but Prometheus does need to have his liver eaten, does he not?

Yeah Damon was quite funny in this. Looking back I'm surprised I didn't mention him in my review. The cast is just too huge.

My take on the Strauss hearing stuff is that it's symbolic: not just a hearing for his clearance, but trial for Oppenheimer's soul. But I agree it didn't quite resonate in that regard.

Hey now, for some of us David Krumholtz is known first and foremost for The Santa Clause...

Generally agree with the broad strokes here, but I'd probably go further and say the final hour is bad. What truly dooms it for me is the utter lack of stakes. We're dealing with whether Oppenheimer gets a security clearance revoked and whether Strauss is confirmed to a president's cabinet post. I mean, I'm sorry, but who gives a shit? With all the interesting possible implications and ramifications of Oppenheimer's work, *that's* what we're focusing on? Maybe somebody smarter than me can explain why Nolan chose to devote that time to those issues, but it made hour 3 - already a dicey proposition, in any movie - a serious slog for me. Which is a shame, because everything up to and including the bomb test is terrific.

Favorite part was Damon talking about the scientist who quit from the project: "Oh, we can just have him killed."
