"that it was dreamed up by a kid who’d won a contest to come on set and 'create a moment for the movie.'" Ha ha, wow.

I've not seen this in a zillion years, but as far as my recollections go, I'm pretty much right where you are. Also if I want Ryan Philippe and Sarah Michelle Gellar in a movie where somebody gets hit by a car, Cruel Intentions is right there.

For all the dunking I've read about the premise, I don't think I've heard either of those discussed much (the diminishing and possible eradication of STI's and therefore lack of need for condoms; or the ensuing wave of pregnancies, unless the sensor does something to your hormones as birth control or something). Good head-scratchers.

Your analogy is spot on and I wish I'd thought of it.

"which has its leads fighting over the last condom in town"

Guess it goes to the world-building, and I guess one could make some vague argument, but this really doesn't seem like all that valuable item in a world that has outlawed non-legally-sanctioned-monogamous sex with a perfect enforcement rate. Still would go to world-building: what are the options for a pregnancy resulting from Spooge Night? I bet they don't know or don't care inasmuch as the entire thing sounds "exactly like 2026--probably even more exactly like 2015, actually!--except for this stupid rule that stupidly constrains our characters' actions." I've given thought to seeing this out of a rubbernecking morbid curiosity, but it can't even manage to sound like a boondoggle, but more like if you inserted a scene in Anyone But You that established Glen Powell and Sydney Sweeney as international assassins but none of the movie was about them taking hit contracts.

It amuses me more than it should that this film is basically inspired by MUCH ADO ABOUT NOTHING - one of my greatest disappointments in THE TWILIGHT ZONE was that they had an episode that features a scene in which William Shakespeare shows up in a cast rehearsal at a modern tv studio (complete with producers) and they do not make this Golden gift from the Muse of Comedy their entire episode.

The jokes about how much and how little show-business has changed in four centuries alone … (Ha! Bonus points if the only explanation ever given for Master Will’s presence is “This is a distinguished Shakespearean come to offer some tips”).

Sadly it’s not even a Shakespeare play they’re putting on.
