I’m not convinced the retrospective framing story accomplishes much, though it perhaps adds some extra finality to the incredible shot that ends the movie. But overall, this is outstanding — a remarkably non-saccharine bittersweet nostalgia piece where every moment feels both small and hugely meaningful. Frankie Corio gives my favorite child performance in ages, and though I like Mescal’s alternatingly-opaque-and-broken-down work, I’m not sure it mandated an Oscar nomination. I’m definitely going to keep up with Wells’ career, though.
