Gangs of London (2020)

In the spring of 2020, in the early days of the COVID pandemic and following the wet thud that was the ending of Game of Thrones, audiences were craving something to fill that niche in the landscape of Peak TV. Something splashy and expansive; grandiose and vulgar; mythic and exploitative, all at once. As it happened, for British audiences at least, Gareth Evans and Matt Flannery had just the thing: a prestige crime epic about a London crime family seeking vengeance after the assassination of their patriarch. For better and worse – and, my goodness, it’s had some wild swings between extremes of quality – Gangs of London is some of the most eruptive and exciting TV on the market for genre fans. Let’s take a journey together through the show, episode by episode.

Andrew is a 2012 graduate of the University of Dundee, with an MA in English and Politics. He spent a lot of time at Uni watching decadently nerdy movies with his pals, and decided that would be his identity moving forward. He awards an extra point on The Goods ranking scale to any film featuring robots or martial arts. He also dabbles in writing fiction, which is assuredly lousy with robots and martial arts.
