Dan and Brian try something for the first time in their 250 episode run: a “mailbag” episode taking questions written in by listeners. Topics include iconic screen kisses, film noir, dream podcast guests, and KPop Demon Hunters vs. Zombies 4.
Questions Answered
- For Dan: You often talk about how much value you place on director’s commentary tracks on movies. If you could have a director commentary track for one movie in all of history, what movie would that be, and why?
- To Brian: You often talk up the practical elements of a film, and when you’re giving your scores you place a pretty strong significance on these elements of the film. Do you have a particular movie where you think that the practical elements are your favorite of all time? Perhaps a favorite set or costume design or something like that?
- What are the most iconic screen kisses?
- What’s your favorite movie cameo?
- Where does the concept of movies end? At what point does movies stop being movies? How far can you deviate from the standard definition before we’re talking something else?
- Hi! What does “film noir” mean to you, and which are your favorite films noirs? I ask in part because I’ve been researching and trying to determine how to define the term, and I find I disagree with some popular opinions that label certain films as film noir.
- For both: is there a piece of media from a medium other than film that you’d particularly like to see adapted?
- Has there ever been a substantial portion of an episode that has been cut out due to editing, or more broadly, are there any interesting anecdotes you can share about The Goods from the editing side of things?
- For Brian: Brian has often talked about on the pod that Dan has a sort of Dan-core movie that is a particular aesthetic. What is your favorite Dan-core movie? And what is the Dan-core movie that you hate the most?
- Who is your dream The Goods guest? Bonus points if you also include the movie that you’d like to talk about with them, and even more bonus points if it’s not Tom Hanks or John C. Reilly.
- Movies are too long nowadays. That’s the question.
- What are your thoughts on the state of Star Wars at the moment?
- Do you like KPop Demon Hunters?
- What’s your opinion of Zombies 4? I like it more than KPop Demon Hunters now.
- What do you like about podcasting as a medium? What do you dislike?
- If there was a Goods spin-off show what would it be like?
- Do a thought experiment about what it would mean if you were still doing the show in your 70s.

- Who are the greatest movie stars of all time, and what are their best films?
- Do you ever read the books for movies you watch and discuss that are adapted from books, and do you like it when you do? You should do that. Books are really good.
- Looking back on the history of The Goods podcast, is there any film that you’d like to visit because your opinion of the film has substantially changed? Any moment where you think you might have gotten it wrong and you’d like to go back and talk it over again?
