Baz Luhrmann burst onto the indie film scene in the 1990s with one of the most distinctive visual styles in all of movies. His films are constructed with aggressive artificiality and razzle-dazzle, decadently embellished and hyperactively edited and musically enriched into packages that approximate the experience of snorting powdered sugar.
Luhrmann, an Australian, has endured an up-and-down critical reputation that’s trended upward in the poptimist, TikTok 2020s. His output has slowed but his influence has grown.
