Director: Wes Anderson

Few directors in the history of cinema have a style as distinctive as Wes Anderson. You know it when you see it: the symmetrical compositions, the dollhouse set designs, the magazine ad colors, the bespoke costumes and props. And yet, as much as Tiktok would have you believe otherwise, Anderson’s touch is no mere series of tics, but the work of a real artist. The director’s visual style has grown more refined and daring across his thirty year career. And his writing is as sophisticated as his visual work, his stories a blend of melancholy and comic, featuring deep, sad hearts and powerful endings. He’s one of the most important filmmakers of the century so far, and one of my favorite ever.

Anderson emerged from the Sundance scene of the early ’90s in a partnership with actor brothers Owen and Luke Wilson. The Wilsons were the first two members of Anderson’s regular troupe, which has expanded and morphed over time. As Anderson’s affected, deadpan style received more attention and inspired more imitators on the festival circuit, the director began experimenting and innovating. By the 2010’s, he’d won over most of his critics and entered an imperial phase, earning 7 Oscar nominations, and finally winning a statuette in 2024.
