Baz Luhrmann burst onto the indie film scene in the 1990s with one of the most distinctive visual styles in all of movies. Aggressive artificiality and razzle-dazzle, decadently embellished and hyperactively edited and musically enriched into packages that approximate the experience of snorting powdered sugar.
Luhrmann, an Australian, has endured an up-and-down critical reputation that’s trended upward in the poptimist, TikTok 2020s. His output has slowed but his influence has grown.
(Luhrmann holds a special place in my heart as the first director for whom I undertook a complete filmography retrospective for The Goods.)
